Should I Take Math 372, 376, or 106?
Short descriptions of Math 372, 376, and 106 follow below. Course outlines can be found at the following URL:
Math 372: Arithmetic for the College Student
- 4 units
- Prerequisite: Complestion of the assessment process.
A study of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, with an emphasis on applications. Includes applications of proportion and percents, unit conversion, and averages. Problem solving, estimation, small group work, exploratory activities, and the communication of mathematical ideas are an integral part of the course. The use of scientific calculators will also be introduced.
Math 376: Pre-Algebra
- 4 units
- Prerequisite: Math 371 or 372 (or the equivalent) with a "C" grade or better or the assessment recommendation for Math 375 or 376.
A comprehensive review of arithmetic involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and signed numbers. Students will solve problems involving ratios, proportions, percents and geometry. Basic algebra concepts and techniques such as, variables, simplifying expressions, solving equations and graphing linear equations will also be introduced. Problem solving, estimation and the communication of mathematical ideas are an integral part of the course.
Math 106: Elementary Algebra
- 5 units
- Prerequisite: Math 375 or 376 (or the equivalent) with a "C" grade or better or the assessment recommendation for Math 105 or 106.
A study of the real number system, first degree linear equations and inequalities, polynomial expressions and equations, factoring, radicals, quadratic equations, and the quadratic formula, interpretation of graphs, and problem solving techniques. Small group work and exploratory activities (including the use of the graphing calculator) are involved in this course.
Algebra Readiness Test
The College now uses a computerized placement process called Accuplacer. For more details, see the following URL:
In the past, prior to the installation of the Accuplacer procedure for placement, the College and department of mathematics used a different procedure, which is outlined below. However, these pages can still be used to help prepare the student to take the Accuplacer placement exam. The self-correcting examination that follows and its accompanying rubric will give the student a sense of where they stand in relation to other students currently enrolled in mathematics courses at the College.
You will need to download the Free Acrobat Reader from Adobe to access the sample assessment examinations on this page.
The sample assessment tool entitled Algebra Readiness Test is used to place students into Math 372, Math 376, Math 105, or Math 106. There are 50 questions and you have 45 minutes to complete the exam. The test is self correcting and directions are provided. Once you complete the Algebra Readiness Test, the following criteria are used to determine placement.
- If you score 35 correct or higher, you are eligible to enroll in Math 105 or Math 106.
- If your score is in the range 31-34, then you should see a counselor for assistance in the appropriate course placement.
- If your score is in the range 20-30, then you should take Math 376.
- If your score is in the range 0-20, then you should take Math 372.
Note: The rubric scores given above are connected to a previous placement procedure that is no longer in use at the College. New students who wish to take a mathematics class must first contact the Academic Support Center (476-4106) to make an appointment to take the Accuplacer placement exam.
