Comment: You should give students the option to take said courses online at any semester. It is much more convenient for students wishing to transfer to a 4-year college within a reasonable time - reasonable being within 2 years. Currently, the Cal Poly SLO campus Computer Science major requires Math 50A, 50B, 50C, and 45 and Physics 4A, 4B, and 4C. Assuming the prerequisite requirement of Math 50A before acceptance of Phys 4A persists, a student would be required a minimum of two years to complete. An exception would be if the student were to start Math 50A in the Spring (not currently offered) - which would then require them to wait until Fall. C.R. should offer a more rigorous plan for such students. The Federal government wants to see higher Math scores for students and community colleges shouldn't prevent that from happening.
Response: (1) It is doubtful that any of these courses would ever be offered online. These are core courses for majors in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology, and they require work that cannot be completed online. In particular, most of these courses have lab requirements.
(2) The math and physics courses can all be completed within two years, which is the standard time period for lower division courses. That would of course require starting with Math 50A in the first semester.
(3) Math 50A is offered both Fall and Spring.

Comment: Why are you offering Phys 4B in Fall 2008 when you haven't even offered Phys 4A in the in Spring 2008? Do you see the conflict of succeeding requirements, 4A then 4B not 4B then 4A.
Response: The normal time for Physics 4B is in the Fall semester. However, as you've noted, Physics 4A was not offered in Spring 2008. We initially decided to offer 4B for the students who took 4A in Spring 2007, but we've found that only a few of these students are left at CR. Therefore, we've revised the schedule for the next two years so that the Physics 4 series will start with 4A in Fall 2008 - see the version 3 changes in the current schedule.

Comment: I see Phys 4B offered in Fall 08 (long overdue for a couple of us who started the series in Spring 07), but Phys 4C isn't offered until Spring 2010. I guess I understand that there probably won't be enough students to enroll in Spring 09, but it would be nice to see it then and finally complete this series.
Response: Unfortunately, there aren't enough students to run Physics 4B and 4C this year (see the response to the previous comment). The schedule has been revised to run 4A and 4B instead (see version 3 changes).

Comment: I would love to see some Math 50A classes on Tuesday or Thursday, or on Mon-Wed-Fri evenings. Having on Mon-Wed-Fri day times is quite an obstacle.
Response: Calculus is too difficult a subject to run on a Tues-Thurs schedule. However, we will offer it at night every three years (see the 3-year rotation near the bottom of the schedule page).

Comment: Thank you so much for doing this!!! I will be taking math 50B Fall '08, and Math 50C Spring '09 and the times are perfect. I hope to take Math 45 and Math 55, but I will only be able to if they end at or before 3 pm. Also, I am wondering when Bio 1-Honors and Math 15-honors will be offered and I am hoping that they will not conflict with Math 50 B and C, especially as only one section of those classes are offered (and I need them all). It is probably more important for me to take honors classes that I can still take, then math classes that will be offered in following semesters. If the Honors classes could be offered ending at or before 3 that would also make things a lot easier for me. I hope this information is helpful. Thanks again for doing this!
Response: (1) Unfortunately, the scheduled time for Math 45 and 55 is 2:30-4:00. There are too many course courses to schedule them all before 3:00.
(2) Bio 1 and Math 15 are not core courses, so they won't appear on this schedule. However, we will try not to schedule Honors Math 15 at the same time as Calculus.

Comment: What about Chem 1B and Chem 8?
Response: Good question. Chem 1B has now been added to the schedule (see version 2 changes). We've decided to leave Chem 8 off of the core course schedule for now, because it may need to move around in different years due to staffing considerations. In the near future, Chem 8 is scheduled to run in Fall 2008.

I live almost two hrs. away. It is also hard for me to attend in the fall. Math 50A Spring courses are only offered M/W/F @ 8:30 AM. I try to save on gas expenses by staying on the coast a few time a week however, early morning M/W/F class would very hard for me to attend. If Math 50A was offered in the evening, fall of 2008, I would be able to attend. I would also prefer to attend longer class sessions, two days a week. I love the Hybrid classes!!
I choose to commute to CR because of the math program and I would love to continue.
Thank you for your consideration.
Response: Math 50A in Spring 2009 has been moved back to the usual MWF 11:30 time slot (see version 3 changes). Calculus is too difficult a subject to run on a Tues-Thurs schedule, or as a hybrid course. However, we will offer it at night every three years (see the 3-year rotation near the bottom of the schedule page). In addition, there is a possibility that it could be webcast to the Hoopa campus in the future during some semesters (probably not in spring, though).

Comment: Since many students have not had Physics 4A, this should be offered during the fall of 2008. Especially since some students have already done Calculus in high school and don't need it during this time. This also allows those whose last year is 2008-2009 to take both Physics 4A and 4B before they move on.
Response: We have revised the Physics schedule for 2008-2009. Physics 4A will now be offered in the fall, followed by 4B in the spring (see version 3 changes).
Mar 9, 2008 10:51 am:
Comment: For fall semesters, can Phys 2A be scheduled MW 8:30-9:55 and 10-11:25?
For spring semesters, can Phys 2B be scheduled MW 8:30-9:55 and 10-11:25 or should a conflict be avoided between it and Bio 5?
Response: (1) Yes, Physics 2A in the fall could be offered MW 8:30-9:55 and 10-11:25, but a three-day schedule is preferable for that course.
(2) No, Physics 2B cannot be moved, because we need to avoid a conflict with Bio 5.

Comment: I think Fall Math 50C changed to MWF, didn't it? Also, where is 50C in Fall 09?
Response: Thanks for noticing. The schedule has been fixed (see version 4 changes).

Comment: Someone asked about Chem 8 -- is that going to be shown on these schedules?
Response: We've decided to leave Chem 8 off of the core course schedule for now, because it may need to move around in different years due to staffing considerations. In the near future, Chem 8 is scheduled to run in Fall 2008.
