At College of the Redwoods, we understand that academic setbacks can happen, but we’re here to help you overcome them. Through personalized counseling and support services, we’ll help you create a plan to improve your academic performance and get back on the path to success. Let’s work together to help you regain your momentum and achieve your educational goals.
Probation
Academic Probation
If you have earned at least twelve (12) units, and your cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0, you will be placed on Academic Probation. Earned units are those units for which entries do not include "W," "I" and/or "NC.”
Progress Probation
A student who has attempted a total of at least twelve (12) units shall be placed on progress probation when the percentage of units in which the student has attempted, for which entries of "W," "I" and/or "NC" are recorded reaches or exceeds 50%. Attempted units are those for which a student was enrolled.
Consequences:
- Loss of “Good Academic Standing” status
- Loss of Priority Registration
- Possible Academic Dismissal, if unable to improve academic standing
- Possible Financial Aid implications (Please contact the site you plan to attend for further information.)
How to Return to Good Standing:
- To be removed from Academic Probation, you must bring your cumulative grade point average to a 2.0 or above.
- To be removed from Progress Probation, you must complete more than 50% of the units you have attempted.
The Probation Process includes 3 actions necessary for improving your academic standing:
- Watch the video below, and complete the Self-Assessment
- Meet with a Counselor/Advisor
- Return to Good Standing by successfully completing your classes
Dismissal
Academic Dismissal
A student who is on academic probation shall be subject to dismissal if the student
earned a cumulative grade point average of less than 2.0 in all units earned in three
(3) consecutive semesters.
***A student who should be dismissed after their second term, but he/she earned a semester GPA of a 2.0 or better during the determining semester, will be allowed to continue on academic probation the following term.
Progress Dismissal
A student who has been placed on progress probation shall be subject to dismissal
if the percentage of units in which the student has attempted for which entries of
"W", "I" and "NC" are recorded in at least three (3) consecutive semesters reaches
or exceeds 50%.
*** A student who should be dismissed after their second term, but he/she successfully
completed more than 50% of the attempted units during the determining semester will be allowed to continue on progress probation the following term.
Dismissal Processes
Once you are on Academic Dismissal, you will need to complete the Readmission Process after a one semester absence to return to CR.
Next Steps:
- Begin the Next Steps for Readmission by completing the Readmission After Dismissal form and scheduling an appointment with Counseling and Advising. For more information, please see Probation and Dismissal Forms & Resources.
- Contact Financial Aid to discuss how your status may impact your eligibility for future aid.
- After receiving a recommendation for readmissionfrom a Counselor, the Academic Appeals Committee will consider whether
or not students may be readmitted. The following criteria will be considered:
- Documented extenuating circumstances
- Other college credit or non-credit coursework showing marked improvement after the semesters on which disqualification was based
- Improved GPA as a result of grade changes, fulfillment of incomplete courses, or academic renewal.
- The student participates in a corrective program designed to assist him/her in improving academic skills.
Readmission Form
- Complete the Readmission Form if you are on Academic Dismissal and would like to return to College of the Redwoods after one semester.
Appeal for Reinstatement
- Complete the Appeal for Reinstatement if you are on Academic Dismissal, but you believe facts exist that warrant an exception
to the dismissal action.
- You must file the appeal with the Office of Admissions and Records within ten (10) working days after the dismissal message is sent.
- The decision of the Academic Appeals Committee will be communicated to the student in writing (which includes email notification) by the Office of Admissions and Records.
- If the dismissal appeal is granted, a student will be reinstated to probation level 2 for an additional semester. At the end of the additional semester, the student’s academic record will again be evaluated to determine whether the student may be removed from probation, should be dismissed, or should be continued on probation.
